Online Counselling in British Columbia: Frequently Asked Questions
What can I talk about in counselling?
Come as you are. You don't need to arrive with a diagnosis or a perfectly defined problem.
Counselling can be a place to explore whatever has been feeling difficult, confusing, or different lately. Stephanie commonly works with adolescents and adults navigating identity, complex trauma, grief, self-worth, people-pleasing, life transitions, relationships, and questions about meaning and purpose.
Sometimes simply knowing that something doesn't feel right without knowing exactly why is the first step.
That's enough to begin.
Is online counselling effective?
Virtual counselling can provide a private, accessible space to have meaningful therapeutic conversations from wherever you feel most comfortable.
Stephanie provides online counselling throughout British Columbia, allowing you to access support without needing to travel to an office or put on a "brave face" when you leave an office.
Do I need to know what I want to work on?
Nope. Sometimes it's better when you don't know.
You can arrive with a problem or simply feel stuck, disconnected from yourself, overwhelmed by a transition, or unsure what is happening beneath the surface.
You don't have to figure it all out before your first session. That's what counselling is for.
Do you work with teenagers?
Yes please.
Stephanie works with adolescents, with a particular interest in self-worth, identity development, sexuality, neurodivergence, relationships, difficult life experiences, trauma, and the transitions that can make navigating adolescence and early adulthood feel especially challenging.
What makes your approach different?
I don't view counselling as a process of finding everything that is “wrong” with you.
Instead, we build awareness around the patterns, experiences, relationships, beliefs, and adaptations that have shaped who you are with curiosity and compassion.
The goal isn't simply to help you function better. It's to help you understand yourself more deeply and uncover what a meaningful life uniquely looks like for you.
Do you provide extended health coverage?
Check your plan's details to see if you're covered by a clinical counsellor.
You will pay Stephanie for the cost of the session in full, and then submit your receipt to your extended health care provider for reimbursement.
Fees are set according to the fee schedule of the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC).
What is your cancellation policy?
Stephanie requires 48 hour notice for cancellations. When a client cancels without notice, it prevents another client from being seen. For this reason, the full fee of the session is charged for missed appointments or late cancellations.
A no-show after 15 minutes past the start time will be counted as a missed session.
If you are running late or circumstances are beyond your control, please contact stephaniesewallcounselling@gmail.com as soon as possible.
What if I'm not sure therapy is right for me?
That's okay.
Reaching out doesn't commit you to long-term counselling.
A consultation can give you an opportunity to ask questions, talk about what you're experiencing, and decide whether the therapeutic relationship feels like a good fit.
I am also happy to provide a referral to another professional. We are all unique and offer something a little different, even within the same niche.
Your care comes first, whether its with me or another mental health practitioner.
How do I book an appointment?
Sessions are book online through the Jane APP and delivered via secure video or by phone. Online therapy sessions are directly connected to the online platform and do not require you to download any programs.
You don't need the perfect words to begin.
You can simply start with:
“I'm not really sure what's going on, but I know I don't want to keep feeling this way.”
